Learning about penis infections can be a challenging and, literally, uncomfortable experience. Fortunately there is at least one penis infection that is pretty easy to identify and has a simple course of treatment - a "male yeast infection".
What is a Yeast Infection?
Yeast infection symptoms are typically not thought of as anything males need to be concerned with. If he experiencing redness, scaling or a rash on the penis however, symptoms of a male yeast infection could be exactly what he needs to check out.
Yeast infections happen when the normal environment of your body is changed. Internal or external factors, such as diabetes or antibiotics, can trigger and overgrowth of fungus in the body. The most common fungus is called Candida albicans. This fungus is not considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD) although it can be passed along through sexual contact. 15-20% of men are infected with a male yeast infection after sexual contact with a partner who has a yeast infection.
Men vs. Women
Women may become susceptible to yeast infections from bubble baths, vaginal contraceptives, and wearing moist or tight fitting clothes.
Men are less likely to get yeast infections due to their long urethra. The length of the urethra prevents the fungus Candida albicans from growing in most instances.
Penis Infection Symptoms
Symptoms of a penis infection caused by yeast may include:
- Redness on the underneath of the penis
- Scaling on the underneath of the penis
- Rash on the underneath of the penis
- Painful penis
Accurate Diagnosis
Because these symptoms of infection on the genitalia may be similar to those associated with more harmful STD’s, it is important to see a doctor and not to attempt to self-diagnose. A formal diagnosis by a doctor may be made through laboratory tests of a genital swab from the infected area.
It is important to receive the correct treatment in order to get rid of a penile yeast infection. Because symptoms may be similar to urinary tract infections, it is important to be seen a doctor. Mistreatment may result in the transmission of the infection to a sexual partner through intercourse or other sexual contact.
The Good News
Antifungal drugs ingested orally or applied topically to the infected area are typically very effective at treating the symptoms of a penis infection.
