Maintaining attractive, well manicured hands and feet can be challenging if you are experiencing a fingernail fungus, townail fungus, or skin infection.

Candida Infection

Candida infections are also commonly referred to as yeast infections.  Symptoms of a yeast infection vary from person to person.

A Candida infection occurs when there is an overgrowth of fungus on or in the body.  This overgrowth may be caused by internal or external factors affecting the body.  A fingernail or toenail infection may occur when hands are in the water a lot, for instance.

When in balance, microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria work with your body to provide nutrition and immunity against harmful bacteria and/or viruses.  Infections from fungi such as Candida occur when the immune system has been weakened by internal or external causes.

Symptoms of Fingernail Fungus

When an infection occurs, the nail beds may become:
  • Red
  • Swollen
  • Oozing pus
The fingernails or toenails may discolor, becoming yellowish or white and the nail may actually separate from the skin.  The nail may grow misshapen and the cuticle and skin around the nail may be painful.

Prevention and Treatment

Because fungus thrives in moisture, keeping hands dry as much as possible is the best way to prevent a Candida fingernail infection.

Medicated ointments or antifungal creams are typically effective at treating infections caused by fingernail or toenail fungii.
